Liu Tienan (刘铁男), Director of the National Energy Administration
"[We will] make real progress in adjusting the energy structure, in improving efficiency of energy processing and transformation and in the establishment of a modern, safe, clean, stable energy industry, [we will] make real progress in putting reasonable controls on total energy consumption and in improving the efficiency use of energy, [we will] also make real progress in promoting both technological and systematic innovation."
- Liu Tienan, while presenting the key work of the NEA at the National Energy Work Conference for 2012 on Jan 10, 2012.
Key phrases: Total energy consumption, nuclear power strategy, national energy development strategy
Core concerns: The nuclear sector, changing energy prices and reform of the system whereby power stations sell their electricity to the grid at a set price that varies according to how the energy was generated. Just over a decade after the breakup of the State Electric Power Corporation and the separation of power plants and the electricity grid, the Energy Administration will be pressing on with the liberalization of the electricity industry by splitting the grid into a distribution network (owning the wires running to businesses and households) and the backbone network (owning the high-voltage cables that run across the country).
